What is Autism?
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), describes a wide range of conditions involving differences in social interaction, communication—both spoken and nonverbal—and repetitive behaviors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, autism is estimated to affect 1 in 31 children and 1 in 45 adults in the United States.
There is no single form of autism; instead, autism encompasses many experiences. It presents differently in every individual, and each autistic person has their own unique combination of strengths and challenges. Some autistic people speak fluently, while others are nonverbal or minimally verbal and communicate through alternative methods. Some have intellectual disabilities, while others do not. Support needs also vary widely—some individuals require substantial daily assistance, while others need minimal support and may live fully independently.
In the U.S., autism is typically diagnosed around age 5, though signs often appear by ages 2 or 3. Autism is lifelong, and a person’s strengths, needs, and challenges may shift over time. As autistic individuals move through different stages of life, they may benefit from varying types of supports and accommodations. Early intervention and therapeutic services can play an important role in supporting skill development and long-term outcomes.

Fraternal Order of Eagles #3358
Granite Falls, WA 98252
Over the past four years, Kim Bielaczyc along with the GF Eagles has helped make it one of our missions to raise money for Autism. From Auctions, tea parties and dinners to raffle baskets, wreath-making classes, and one of our larger fundraisers—the chainsaw log-carving event—the Eagles have proudly raised $8,000 in support of Autism. Most of these funds have remained in our community, benefiting the Sherwood Learning Center and the Arc of Snohomish helping our local schools.
Every dinner served at our fundraisers, every raffle ticket purchased, and every log carving taken home has created another ripple in our wave of support.
